Region: Africa-Wide

Ages: 18 and under

soschildrensvillages.org.uk works with African children who have been affected by HIV or AIDS, either directly or indirectly. This may include children who contracted the disease at birth, through needles, or other means. Children indirectly affected by the virus typically have parents or caretakers who have been infected.

soschildrensvillages.org.uk works to send donations only to the children and families to ensure that street children are taken care of. While there are few opportunities via this program to work in Africa or the UK and get paid, they do offer advise on working there, or donating one’s time.

Overall, the site is secure enough to make a donation on, if not a little unofficial. They do provide their Charity Commission registered number, which is 1069204, so that one can check their authenticity. The donation page allows users to donate to street children in America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. It leads to a page outlining bank information to complete the donation.

Overall, the site does lack a bit in professionalism, but is very streamlined for donating to children either on a monthly or one-off basis.

jubileeventures.org is a volunteer organisation run by Frontier Africa, which is located in Nairobi. They offer teaching, mentorship, medical, and dental programmes for children in Africa. There are also internships in Kenya and other areas that include African language and culture courses.

UPDATE: I just spoke with a friend who is in pharmacy school who applied for the programme at jubileeventures.org, and she informed me that she completed the application, which was very competitive. After exchanging a few emails, they never replied to her and she was not able to participate in their excursion.

Real Gap focuses on allowing interested parties in the UK work abroad in Africa during gap year. Children of all ages in the key regions that Real Gap is present require educational and medical assistance. Price range from GBP 399 to GBP 7599, depending on destination and area of focus. The cheaper end focuses on Cape Town and is more of a travel excursion, while the more expensive trip is for people who are equipped to deal with animals and that area of expertise.

The site is very well organised and set up to deal with a high level of inquires. Signing up for a trip is easy and takes little time. The prices are competitive. Realgap.co.uk makes working in Africa easy, and there are several options for working specifically with street children.

Area: Ghana

Focus: Children 10-under

streetchildafrica.org.uk is a donation-only website that outlines the cost of helping a street child in Africa in getting food and an education. Since the public school system in Ghana requires uniforms and certain materials, it is difficult for many youths there to receive a proper education.

This website clearly outlines the costs for clothing, feeding, and sending a child to school in Ghana. An excerpt:

£10 will buy a school uniform and shoes enabling a street child to attend a government school in Nigeria.

£10 will care for a new street baby and mother for a week in a crèche in the slums of Accra, Ghana.

£30 will support a street child in school in Harare, Zimbabwe for one year.

£100 will pay a street worker, a trusted trained adult in Africa’s city streets to listen to, guide and protect street children, for one month.

£2,500 buys educational materials to take education to the slum streets – allowing children excluded from the mainstream school an opportunity to learn.

PROS: This service publishes it’s charity number in the UK, so visitors and participants can research and ensure that it is legitimate. They also very keenly outline the cost of helping kids who are on the street already with no hope of qualifying for a public school get an formal education. The street-helpers, or people who watch after children and mentor them in the streets is also a smart donation.

CONS: It would be nice if they explored more options for becoming involved with the children, either through mail interaction or going to Ghana to work with them.

Area: United States

Focus: Children 15-under

Stand Up For Kids is a quality service that appoint volunteer counselors to reach out to unfortunate and disenfranchised children in the United States in both urban and rural areas. As a volunteer, your main job entails acting as a mentor and role model for kids whose only option has been homelessness. These outreach programs are designed to provide repeated exposure to children and knowledge of other options besides homelessness.

Finding the children who are in need in these areas can be difficult because of urban sprawl, but typical dangers they may face are:

(1) danger is exposure or vulnerability to harm (2) hazard is a chance of being injured or harmed, (3) jeopardy is danger or risk of loss or injury, and (I) peril is a condition of imminent danger, exposure to the risk of harm or loss.

PROS: The volunteer process is relatively easy. There are positions for street volunteers, board members, interns. There is also a donation page that is somewhat streamlined.

CONS: The page should be certified by verisign and hackersafe if they are going to take donations. The page quality is a bit low given what they endeavor to do. It should be stressed that this is, for all intents and purposes, a legitimate program, but these distractions could deter some visitors.
